When Marcus was a young boy, he lived in a small house with his sister named Audrey, along with his parents. He had a fairly normal childhood, and seemed to be happy living with his family at the time. However, on one Halloween day, everything would change for the worse. While a six-year-old Marcus was playing with a jack-in-the-box in the bathtub with his sister, and their parents were in the kitchen, two men suddenly broke into the house with the intention of robbing it. One of the men started mercilessly beating Marcus’ father, who pleaded with the burglar to take whatever he wanted, and to get out of the house. The man then told his accomplice to look in each of the house’s rooms to see if there was anything worth stealing. Marcus, trying to protect Audrey, quickly whispered to his sister to stay down, and held her head underneath the bathtub to hide her from the intruders. While the burglars were rummaging through the home trying to find something valuable to take, one of them overheard Marcus’ mother in the kitchen calling the police for help, and quickly rushed over to stop her. He angrily told the woman to hang up the phone, and then stabbed her in the stomach with a knife, leaving her to bleed out on the floor. The intruders then entered the bathroom, but found nothing worth stealing, so they left the house. Later, when the police arrived at the home, they found the parents’ dead bodies laying on the ground, along with Marcus and Audrey, who were still alive. They took Audrey to the hospital, who appeared to be in good condition, however, Marcus was extremely traumatized from the incident, and was in a catatonic state. The two children had no immediate family left to take care of them, causing the brother and sister to be sent to Saint Michael’s Orphanage. Audrey was behaved during her time in this place, and was treated well, however, Marcus was molested by the facility’s priest, Father Chuck, and was often abused by two nuns named Sister Mary and Sister Constance. When he saw how happy the other kids staying at the orphanage were, he felt jealous, and became extremely violent towards them, even beating one boy’s head in with a baseball bat and killing him. The nuns punished him very often for this behavior, and would whip him, drown him, and force him to pray in order to get him to repent for his sins, however, he never would, and seemed to feel very little remorse for his actions. They then found an old mask in the orphanage’s theater that they put on him, which caused the other children to stay away from Marcus. Marcus was kept separate from the other kids, who would often pick on him, make up stories and rumors about him, and call him names. Despite being treated horribly by nearly everyone at Saint Michael’s, Marcus still loved and cared about his sister at the time. Audrey was eventually adopted by one of the police officers who was at the crime scene of her parents’ murder, and he wanted to take in Marcus as well, however, he could not afford to support two children. The man offered to take Audrey back to the orphanage every once in a while to visit her brother even if he couldn’t live with her, to which she agreed. However, Audrey would eventually forget about her brother, and seemed to enjoy living with her new family. After many years of being abused by the orphanage staff, the facility probably did not want to shelter Marcus anymore because of how old he had gotten, and Marcus was likely transferred to a mental institution when he was a young adult, where he stayed for an unknown amount of time before he escaped or was released. He deeply hated his sister for leaving him behind and forgetting about him, and the people who abused him while he was staying at Saint Michael’s, and began to plot his revenge against them.
