Tragic

There are many heroes, villains and other characters in between who suffered some sort of a tragedy, multiple tragedies, traumas, not being in control of their actions, having some sort of an illness or disorder, generally having tragic lives, having good/understandable motives for their acts, being manipulated or overall being sympathetic/empathetic.

Note, tragic characters cannot be pure evil.
